Replacing The Transmission Input Sensor – Step by Step
|My transmission’s shifting wasn’t very smooth and from time to time it seemed that it doesn’t shift on time.
After a long hill climbing, suddenly, the auto transmission shifted to 3rd gear, stayed there and the “N” light started to blink while the “D” light was on.
The first thing to do while that happens is to pull over in a safe place, turn off the engine, wait few seconds and then start the engine and drive, see if that happens again.
Do not disconnect the battery, it will erase the error code and you won’t be able to find out the reason for the “safe mode” (or, the other name of it: “limp mode” ).
In order to diagnose the reason for that, you should read the transmission error codes. You can do that using a scanner or, by grounding the #1 pin in the diagnostic connector (see “How to read codes without scanner“).
The error code in my case indicated that the Input Sensor failed.
I decided to replace it, although, the problem could be in its harness (the reason is that the transmission had been reconditioned few months ago and I assumed they checked the harness).
Anyway, I bought the sensor, Mitsubishi part number is: MR 567292 . Most of Mitsubishi transmission after 1997 use that sensor.
You can find it on eBay (Support us by using that link):
Required tools:
13mm socket and wrench
10mm socket + wrench+extender
Let’s get dirty…
1. Park the car in a safe place, where you can go under the car and not getting hit by other cars…
2. Disconnect the battery.
3. Remove the transmission shield (13mm bolts, see in the picture below):
4. Locate the sensor on the transmission, you can see it on the left, next to the bell housing (“P” in the scheme below).
5. Use the 10mm socket with the extender to unscrew the bolt at the top of the sensor. Carefully, pull it out, disconnect the harness and connect your new sensor.
The Transmission input sensor in Top/Side view:
6. Insert the sensor back to its place, screw the 10mm bolt. Put the transmission shield back in place and connect the battery.
7. Go out for a test drive and see that everything works as it should…
1st this website is great! keep going!
I have a Pajero 2008 3.2L and had the same problem today with the gear (3 days ago I sinked in the mud…)
I was driving on the highway when suddenly, the auto transmission shifted to 3rd gear, stayed there and the “N” light started to blink while the “D” light was on. After pooling over and turning off and on the engine everything got back to normal.
I tried reading the codes without scanner – is this relevant to my model?
in any case I had just the Center diff lock blinking non stop.
What do you recommend?
Hi,
Thank you 🙂
I’m afraid that it is impossible reading the engine fault codes without the scanner.
You may try, it might work with the transmission and transfer (I never tried that on 2008 model).
If you won’t be able to read the codes without a scanner, I would go to a dealership to read them.
Saar hello,
how can I talk to you?
THx,
Doron
i see you used part number MR567292.
all my research says to use MR518300
ARE THESE THE SAME ?
I HAVE A UK SHOGUN 2001 3.2 AUTO .
MANY THANKS PAUL
Honestly, I do not know.
I guess they are not. (different number…)
Hi
My 2002 Mitz pajero auto transmission reverse doesn’t work. What seems to be the problem?
I had the same problem , i replace the sensor & the problem appear again Lock in third gear “input shaft sensor speid” apper again
Hi,
I had that issue as well, for few times.
You should check the wiring harness to the sensor as well as the sensor itself
Hi,
I have this same problem and have managed to get the input and output sensors already.
However, I also want to replace the wiring harness. Having a hard time finding the part number for the wiring harnesses to the sensors. Could you help me out?
Thanks
hi
good day,

I suggest you will ask a local dealer as there might be changes through the years in your country.
Hi saar
I am experiencing the same problem with this problem, but with code 23, the output shaft sensor, transmission was rebuilt 5000 km ago, did you resolve the problem? is it the sensor or the harness or both?
Thanks
Danny
Hi Danny,
In my case, it was the harness (I didn’t solve it, the guy who bought my Pajero did…)
I am going to do the same and sell mine:)
If you don’t mind me asking did you upgrade to a newer Pajero or you had enough with it?
Thank you for taking the time to help us here.
Hi Danny,
I bought an older Jeep Grand Cherokee for weekends only and a Citroen Berlingo as a daily drive.
That way, I can travel without worrying that I’ll break something which won’t allow me to work the next day…
Hi fellas I have a nm 3.2 diesel . Goes into limp mode when under load towing. Revs for along time in 3rd before I change it manually. Only seems to happen in hotter weather conditions.
Hi,
Did you check the failure codes?
Start with that.
When was the last transmission oil change?
Sir, I have a Pajero 2008 3.2 and had a problem today with the gearbox lights on the dashboard, all the lights that indicate the 4wheel or 2wheel drive went off and only the orange light at the center that’s flashing and the car is still driving well but you can not engage the 4wheel. After pooling over and turning off the engine and restarting everything got back to normal and I will drive for some 10 to 20 km and it will go off again, please any advise on this issue. thanks.
You should start by reading the fault codes

Thanks Saar, the fact is that there is no other fault indicating only the yellow light flashing and the 4Wheel lights are all off.
Hi Saar
Thanks for your site!! My pajero is a 3.2 SB manual, and it is in a limp mode, any ideas?
